Growing Green Coffee at the MAV Coffe Nursery.
Finca San Antonio is responsable for hosting MAC COFFEE Nursery. We can say this special fam is trully the origin of origins.Every beginning in MAV COFFEE and our family has started in Finca San Antonio , our coffee shall be no different.
The Beginning of a MAV COFFEE tree starts in our privately run nursery. With the help of our Agro-engineer team Lean Coffee, we carefully overlook the first signs of life pushing up from the ground . These young trees are nurtured for the first year of life under cover of light shade in a nursery, until they are prepares to be re-homed to other MAV COFFE farms.
QUALITY MATTERS
There is two ways . At MAV we choose both nursery beds , but in most cases we opt for the small bags.
No seed is the same and differentiation is key. Sow only the selected and certified coffee seeds. It truly helps us to nurse with a purpose in mind and choose the right method. We keep close tabs on the KPI´s that matter most and pay close attention to indicators. For example, some seeds are taken from better performing plants on the farm for production, others are trying to breed in disease resistance traits or higher yields.
ABOUT PLANTING
For sowing the coffee seeds, germination beds are set at 1-meter width and of convenient length to a height of 15 cm from the ground level. We then cover the seeds with a thin layer of finely sieved soil. Additionally, mulch with a layer of paddy straw ensures optimum temperature for seed germination and protects the seeds from desiccation.
When it comes to planting in bags, seeds are initially propagated around 125mm deep in ideally loam soil. They are watered frequently and often planted during the wet season so that the soil remains moist whilst the roots establish.
